I highly recommend Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries as this is probably the most similar game to MWO. You can get it for free from MekTek:

Playing instant action with mechs/builds similar to those already released is not a bad way to practice a bit and the regular campaign is a lot of fun too, of course.

MWLL is most modern, and by far the best choice: http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/

MW4: Mercs is free from Mektek. Or MW: Living Legends, however that requires Crysis: Warhead and a mod download. On the plus side I believe that Crysis is on sale during the Steam Summer Sale.

Good hunting!

Buy Crysis Warhead on Steam--10 bucks right now and play Mechwarrior Living Legends. It's a blast and it'll get you ready for MWOL.

I have totally been considering installing Mech 4 Mercs to start getting back into this game, which I think was the best and final one of the old series just for the tournament options.

Gonna be a long couple weeks...

In the past 6 days I played through MW3 and Pirate's Moon, MW4 Vengeance and Black Knight, and am now working on MW4 Mercenaries. Time is going by so slowly...

I would say MW2 MW2 Mercs or MW3 I consider MW4 a downgrade from 3.......But if you dont have a copy of those games and dont feel like paying for them there MW4 Mercs free release

I am currently playing MW3 for practice with the combined joystick for turn, twist for torso tracking. Also, with the attenuating lasers of MWO, I figured getting back into the ability of lasing one area of the mech would be wise.

Invest some time into playing the Mechwarrior Online beta while you are waiting for Mechwarrior Online to launch.
